Northern Lights in Newfoundland

The chance to see the aurora borealis here in Newfoundland is awfully low. Seeing the lights has been on my bucket list for years and I never would have thought I’d be able to see them right here on the island. I figured I’d have to fly up north to Labrador or overseas to Iceland but somehow, someway, the sun decided to burst the day before my birthday and bless me and my homeland with this stunningly beautiful night show.

I only wish I had more than just my phone camera with me to better capture the sky for you guys. I hope you enjoy these photos nonetheless and perhaps we’ll get lucky again someday and we’ll all get to see the northern lights once more.

Photos taken March 23rd.

I usually check the aurora tracker online once a week (or whenever I remember to think about it) and prepare for any solar flares but I had no clue that this storm was coming. Actually, if it wasn’t for my friend stepping outside and insisting I go look at the sky I probably would have missed it completely!

The probability of seeing the aurora here was on the lower end of the scale so the sky was mostly green… which made for some cool post-apocalyptic style photos.

We spent about an hour or so taking photos as the aurora shifted it’s colour and pattern in the sky. I took about 40 photos with my phone but only 12 or so were of good enough quality to share. In some you can see a more rainbow effect whilst in others you can see the waves of green or blue. It was a stunning show and I could not wipe the smile off my face the entire night.

    1. 2024 is supposed to be an incredible year for auroras! I’m so excited to try and capture some more photos ✨ I’m still going to plan a trip further North to truly experience it and apparently Yellowknife is a great location to go.
