Kayaking Eugenia Lake

During my visit to Ontario (last summer) I was able to go kayaking for the very first time, and to be honest, I’ve been daydreaming about doing it again. It was the highlight of my summer and such a good time with even better company. The sun was shining, the kayaks were ready to go, and Eugenia Lake was looking calm and pristine. Let’s go!

Eugenia Lake is actually a man-made lake with a lot of character. There are old tree stumps sticking up out of the water, which were fun to kayak around. There’s a pathway through tall grass/reeds that led to another section of the lake that was sorta romantic to go through, like swan boats going through a tunnel type thing.

I saw various birds during the adventure and was able to admire the lake’s beauty. We even rowed the kayaks up river and had to portage over some fallen trees which was super exciting and fun. Rowing against the current was hard work and lots of laughs but we made it up the river as far as we could before we had to turn around. Apparently there was a private fishing area and we weren’t a part of the fishing group. None to worry, taking the kayaks back down river was even more fun!

Yes I know, where did my life jacket go? Well, I happen to be an excellent swimmer and the lake was so calm and shallow that I wasn’t worried about it. I wasn’t alone if anything happened either. Plus… it was so hot outside. I know, I know, safety is the number one priority, but I truly wasn’t worried about drowning at all. In fact, at one point during the adventure, I jumped into the water to retrieve a part of the fishing rod and it was quite refreshing. Ssshhh… true Newfoundlander’s are part mermaid, you know.

After coming back down river and out to where we started, we took some time to relax and enjoy the sunshine. Surprisingly, my pale skin didn’t burn but I didn’t get much of a tan either. After soaking up some sunshine, we made our way under a bridge to the other side of Eugenia Lake and paddled around for a bit. The day was too beautiful to head back home too soon.

If you have the opportunity to have some fun and enjoy the sun, take it. Saying “yes” to new experiences and adventures could teach you a lot of things, show you a lot of beauty, and fill your heart with a lot of love. It was truly my pleasure spending time on Eugenia Lake and trying something new like kayaking and getting to know someone better at the same time. Life is too short to not enjoy it and have some fun while you can!

Until next time…
