Crochet Projects

I’ve had a love for knitting and crochet ever since I was a young girl watching my nan enjoy the craft. She’d always be making doilies, socks, mittens, and so much more. I’d happily sit next to her and observe her hand movements with the needle and yarn, while also watching the Blue Jay games on TV (she loved her baseball). I’d ask questions and she was always so patient and willing to show me. It wasn’t until many years later when I got her to show me again (this time as a teenager) that I finally learned the basics and started knitting and crocheting. I was far from being an expert, but by’ golly I could knit a nice scarf or hat!

During college, I met a classmate who was crocheting while studying and I thought she was so cool. She could read her study notes while crocheting and not even have to look at her hands at all. It blew me away and reminded me of my nan’s talent. So, me being me, the next day I sat with her and we studied together while crocheting and she gave me some tips and tricks with it. I enjoy making new friends and sharing hobbies and information, and I’m pretty sure we both did excellent on our exam too.

I spent so much time this year with a crochet hook and yarn in my hands and it’s been so much fun. I think the bikini tops are super cute and the fisherman doll eventually had a little crochet fish added to his bag. I got super lazy while attaching his head to his body so I might re-do that part someday soon to tidy him up. I don’t follow too many patterns and prefer to make up my own designs to see how they turn out. The ‘ol F.A.F.O. method has always worked best for me.

Crocheting and knitting can seem intimidating at first, and it may take some time to figure out the basics, but it truly is such a relaxing craft and hobby. I’m forever grateful that my nan took the time to teach me her talents. Even though she’s no longer with us, every time I knit or crochet I always have her in my thoughts and prayers. For me, it’s a generational gift to continue down the family tree someday.

It’s also satisfying when you finish a project and it turns out so good. A friend of mine spent all summer crocheting herself a big tote bag and she did such a good job and put in so much work. The smile on her face when it was finally done was priceless!

So, if you’re bored over this winter season (or any time of the year) and looking for a new hobby to occupy your time, why not grab a crochet hook, or some knitting needles, a couple balls of yarn, and let your creativity take over and see what happens. You’re capable of so many things in this world. Never limit your potential.

Until next time…
