Three Pond Barrens

Summer is taking forever to arrive here in Newfoundland but we were lucky enough to have a nice day today. I took advantage of the warm weather and sunshine and went outside to explore someplace new.

I ended up on a trail without a marker and had no idea where it lead, but, I also didn’t care! I was ready for an afternoon adventure exploring the forest and enjoying the fresh air.

We had a full day of rain yesterday which made the trail a bit mucky. I had to jump around and dodge boggy bits many times during the adventure. After 45mins or so I still had no idea where I was or where I was going but I was already immersed into the wilderness.

The trail was fantastic. It was wide enough that you could walk side-by-side, or even 3 by 3, and it felt so peaceful. I couldn’t hear any traffic noises in the distance or anything at all. Just the gentle sounds of trees rustling in the wind and twigs crunching beneath my feet. The trail branched off in different directions during the hike and it was fun deciding which path I should take. Since I didn’t know where the trail would lead, the entire hike felt very exciting.

I finally came to a sign that told me where the heck I was after ~2hrs of following the trail. Apparently the area is called “Three Pond Barrens” and it connects to the Pippy Park area of St. John’s. I highlighted the map in yellow to show the path I took through the forest (minus some off-trail exploration). There were various different paths I could have taken so this trail definitely has re-hiking abilities.

I took a little break to study the map and then headed back on the trail. I needed to walk all the way back to the car… but that meant I could take different paths on the way back and do some more exploring. Heck yeah!

About 3hrs later I made it out of the forest and felt so refreshed and ready for supper. Honestly, I felt ready for a nap after the hike and fresh air. My boots definitely needed some TLC as well after walking through the marshy parts. I’ll clean those up another day…
