T’was a beautiful day to visit Middle Cove Beach! The wind blowing from the ocean helped a lot against the heat and humidity, but it didn’t help much with the smell of dead fish.
It’s capelin season here in Newfoundland, which means there are hoards of these little guys rolling onto the beaches. It’s common for capelin to get stuck onshore and die, providing our noses with their wonderful scent of decomposition. Whether it’s from the tide or the local birds feasting and leaving the remains to rot, it was stinky.

However, despite the smell, it was worth it!
I visited the beach with my friends, Michele and Bob, who both happen to be photographers and great company. Listening to the both of them banter back and forth with each other is absolutely heart-warming. I love seeing genuine connections between people.

I enjoyed being their muse for a few snapshots, but eventually ran away from the spotlight and climbed up a hill for a better view of the coastline.
I’m glad I was able to squeeze in a visit to Middle Cove before heading to my hometown. It’s probably one of my favourite beaches on this part of the island.

I’m leaving St. John’s on Tuesday, which means I only have 2 more days to finish sorting and packing my things. I have to admit, cutting down all of my belongings to fit into a single 75L backpack is very satisfying. I’m sure I’ll end up downsizing my backpack even more once I’m at my parent’s house. Oooooh the excitement! Until then…
